Movie Synopsis:
When a sexy, high-end escort holds the key evidence to a scandalous government cover-up, two bumbling young detectives become her unlikely protectors from a ruthless assassin hired to silence her.
Movie Plot Summary:
Anthony always dreamed of being a famous chef. Julian only thought about women. With neither really working out, the childhood best friends decide to start a detective agency. Unfortunately for them, on their first case they must help protect a sexy, high class escort who holds the key evidence to a scandalous cover up. The two bumbling detectives soon find themselves running from the mob, a corrupt US Senator, and a ruthless Mary Poppins-like assassin - all of whom would stop at nothing to hide the truth. It's just an average day for two bumbling losers.
This hilariously violent action-comedy stars Paz Vega (Spanglish), Janet McTeer (Tideland, Tumbleweeds), Christopher McDonald (Happy Gilmore), Tony Curran (Gladiator, Underworld: Evolution) Scott Mechlowicz (EuroTrip), and DL Hughley. CAT RUN is directed by John Stockwell, written by Nick Ball and John Niven, and produced by Bill Perkins and Keith Perkins. CAT RUN will open in select theaters on Friday, April 1.
Reviewed by Andra Zadnik:
Before a recent screening of “Cat Run,” the producer came out and said, “All I ask is that if you hate it, really hate it.” With that kind of caveat, the audience prepared itself to hate everything about the film.
The premise is simple: High-end prostitute (Paz Vega) witnesses a massacre of her fellow sex workers and procures the evidence to indict several high-ranking government officials of various nations. Two goofy private investigators (Scott Mechlowicz and Alphonso McAuley), looking for their first job, try to find her while a highly effective hit man is also hot on her trail. One thing leads to another, and all hell breaks loose.
Contrary to expectations set by its filmmaker, this film is fun — a romp that should be approached with nothing other than the anticipation that you are going to have a good time screening it. Be warned: It is rather gratuitous — in every sense of the word — but amusing nonetheless. The storytelling is sloppy at times, introducing every character in a “Snatch.”-like sequence that mostly confuses things rather than make the storyline any clearer, but once the film reaches its stride, the narrative smooths out with a belly laugh or two and, eventually, a little heart. The editing is fast and furious, which assists in making the whole film feel over-the-top, which only adds to its over-all aura of a good time had by all.
Truly a film made by and for men, there are intense images of violence and sex, which could be too much for anyone squeamish. But the best part is the casting of the deadly hit man — or, rather, hit woman — who follows the trio all over Europe. Helen Bingham (Golden Globe-winning, classically trained British actress Janet McTeer) is the most kick-ass character in the entire movie. And she is a sixtysomething woman. Who saw that coming?
She is intelligent, abhors the sex industry — especially men who profit from it — and generally is willing to put her life on the line for her career. She is the modern working woman. Out of place except for her amazing assassin skills, she is by far the island of feminism in an otherwise ode to the 13-year-old male sense of humor. The film capitalizes on violence, sex and ridiculous jokes (there is a triple-amputee secretary) but still manages to create a character who completely annihilates both the targeted hits and any stereotypes that dictate that postmenopausal women are not “cool.”
While it does not push any social boundaries, other than how much violence one is willing to squirm through, “Cat Run” is a fun romp with heart and some semblance of social consciousness. Audiences will be entertained and, for about 15 minutes, think about social constructions and a woman’s role in them. All this despite the producer’s self-deprecating warning label.
