Celebrity Surfers
It’s not often that you see a celeb catch a tube (it’s generally a limo or private jet), but some well-known surfer dudes like nothing better than that feeling of freedom when they’re making a splash out on the waves.
With her trademark blonde hair and blue eyes, self-confessed ‘adventurous’ Cameron Diaz is the ultimate surf babe. While filming Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, Cam learned enough surfing skills to do her own waveriding in that famous sequence and, despite breaking her nose on her 31st birthday during a surfing mishap off Waikiki Beach, the actress adores catching the waves in Hawaii, especially with her beau, Justin Timberlake in tow!
Although the surfing world is still male-dominated, more and more girls are taking to the water. Kate Bosworth and Sanoe Lake filmed surf flick ‘Blue Crush’ on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii, where King of the New Wave, Jack Johnson, who has surfed since he could practically walk and says his first love is the sea, grew up.
Singer Enrique Iglesias is a surf, and windsurf, dude. ‘When I’m out there on the water, I can disconnect and just forget about everything else,’ he says. ‘As a kid, I loved to spend the summer at the beach in Marbella with my brother. Later, I liked to windsurf in Key Biscane in Miami and other spots in Florida.’
But his latest hotspot for surfing is Los Cabos in Mexico. ‘It kind of reminds me of Marbella,’ he says. ‘ The weather is perfect, the people are very nice, it’s low key but also very fun.’Rachel Griffiths likes being at one with the big blue and fellow actress, Minnie Driver and Hollywood hunks Keanu Reeves and Sean Penn are also big fans of the sport.
Kevin Bacon makes for Malibu, while with more secret surf spots than you can shake your board at, Heath Ledger and Joseph Fiennes head down under to Australia.
Originally from Devon, homegrown Joss Stone is the epitome of hippy-chick surf chic. Sexy Salsa singer Ricky Martin has been livin’ la vida loca on the ocean since he learned to surf in Puerto Rico as a child and tennis ace Mark Philippoussis has been hooked since catching his first wave in LA. Adam Brody of The O.C. is a Californian surfer dude teen for real, while The Fast and the Furious’star, Paul Walker was an early starter, first getting the feel for a body board when he was just four!
During the production of ‘Lord of the Rings’ in New Zealand, surfing became a popular pastime among the cast and crew, with Orlando Bloom and Viggo Mortenson among those carving the waves. And what did Tom Cruise get up to while filming The Last Samaurai there? You guessed it, he was shooting the curl in between shooting scenes.
Watersports Celebs
For a slice of la Dolce Vita, stars head to Italy and France during the summer months to show off their water-skiing skills. Brad Pitt was spied practising on Lake Garda, outside his pal, George Clooney’s luxury villa on the banks of Lake Como, while Rob Lowe chose celeb-magnet Costa Smeralda on the Sardinian coast. Model Caprice also loves water-skiing and Spanish heartthrob Antonio Banderas is massively into competitive sports and takes to the water around Marbella (Spain’s answer to St. Tropez) to water-ski with his wife, Melanie Griffith.
The glitzy marina, Puerto Banús is a perennial favourite for high-profile stars like Mariah Carey, who loves working out here, jetskiing and scuba diving. Another fave pastime is making waves on jetskis…the stars can’t get enough of it! Enrique Iglesias and girlfriend, ex-tennis player Anna Kournikova jump aboard in St. Barts in the French West Indies, also a favourite destination for Uma Thurman and Kirstin Dunst.
Jenson Button chooses the crystal clear waters around the coast of Mallorca, while Bryan McFadden was spotted having some jetski fun on Australia’s Gold Coast. Footballers Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney and fianceé Coleen McCloughlin head to the beautiful beaches of Barbados in the winter months. Any celeb worth their paparazzi has been seduced by the sun-drenched, picture perfect beaches here – the famous Sandy Lane Hotel being the place for a luxury 5-star stay.
Hip-hop star, Diddy got into a spot of bother with the water police when he was caught jetskiing too close to the shores of the famous bay of St. Tropez! The French Riviera’s most fashionable hotspot during the months of July and August, the village attracts big names like The Beckhams and Beyoncé and Naomi Campbell to soak up the sun, messing around on boats and splashing about on jetskis. Offering watersports galore, it’s private beach clubs a-go-go on Pampelonne Bay. Jetset favourites include hedonistic Nikki Beach, La Voile Rouge, famed for Champagne-spraying parties and Club 55.
